Stemming from the family of African-American dance forms, Swing dance gained prominence alongside the rise of Swing & Jazz music during the early 1900s. As a matter of fact, there are a number of styles under the swing dance umbrella, however, the most prominent offshoot came to be known as Lindy Hop, which is characterised typically by its seamless improvisation of rhythm and melody, and upbeat, sometimes acrobatic aesthetic. The dance form also accentuates the possibilities of a collaborative spirit or interplay amongst musicians and dancers.

As long-time members of the Lindy Hop community in Mumbai, Prekshaa and Sam were first introduced to the dance form in 2016 by a mutual friend, and since then the duo has constantly pushed the boundaries to better their craft and also share their love for Lindy Hop. Over the years, they have participated in various dance camps across the globe and have learnt from international dance instructors visiting India. Their focus is not merely limited to understanding the dance style but they also take it upon themselves to research the culture and history associated. They believe the following about the inception of Swing and Lindy Hop “Both the music, as well as the dance styles associated with the Swing genre, enshrine the tumultuous times endured by the African-American community through the decades of slavery. Therefore, the artistic expressions span a wide spectrum of emotions, ranging from joy, sorrow, hope, liberation and love. While Swing dance is primarily seen as a partnered dance, its influences from Tap dance allow dancers to break away into solo movements, colloquially known as Solo Jazz. As instructors, we indeed strive to educate ourselves with regards to the evolution of the culture so we can provide our students with a better understanding and appreciation for it.”

Slingshot Swing, the brainchild of Prekshaa and Sam, was established in 2019 and aims to enhance confidence and nurture the ability to find one’s self-expression while dancing. Their Lindy Hop and Charleston classes cater to across-the-board skill levels, from absolute beginners to experienced dancers as well. The classes are structured in a way that ensures students have fun, while at the same time honing their technique and skills. Over the past few years, Prekshaa and Sam have not only guided their students but have also propelled the awareness of the dance form and helped contribute to the growth of the Lindy Hop community in Mumbai. A lively and fun dance form, Lindy Hop is considered by many to be the precursor to many dance forms performed today, including Jive and Ballroom Jive, and is also danced socially in Mumbai, much like other partner dance forms like Tango, Salsa and Bachata.
