A Night at the Opera

The NCPA is bringing a fully-staged opera to the city! And don’t worry, it’s not a tragedy. A colossal collaboration with the Hungarian State Opera, Johann Strauss II’s light & funny Die Fledermaus will have three shows between the 12th – 16th of October at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre. This opera, by the composer of popular waltzes like ‘The Blue Danube’, features a plot of complicated deceptions, humour and delightful music. It has been part of the Hungarian State Opera repertoire for 125 years & will be sung in German with English subtitles.

The story begins on New Year’s Eve when Eisenstein is sentenced to jail for punching a police officer. He decides to evade jail for one night to go to Prince Orlofsky’s ball with his friend Falke, without telling his wife Rosalinde. Tipped off about her husband’s plan, Rosalinde follows him to the ball, disguised as a Hungarian countess. Adele, their maid, also feigns an excuse to be released from work that night so that she can also go to the ball, disguised as a Russian actress named Olga. Much fun and frivolity ensues, in what remains one of Strauss’ most beloved works and a favourite with audiences around the globe.

Staging this opera is a huge feat with several hundred people involved – soloists, chorus, orchestra, dancers, extras & technical crew. Two massive containers carrying sets, props and at least a hundred costumes have also travelled all the way from Hungary. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to witness such a rare event live in Mumbai, only at the NCPA!
