Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and prayer leading up to Easter Sunday and this year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 22. The ashes obtained by burning the palms used on the previous Palm Sunday are applied in the shape of a cross on the foreheads of the congregation after every mass.
